I used to run H322 in some 'bear loads' I was all worked up over, but the reality is that H322 never turned in much as far as consistent performance, and consistency is the strong suit of A5744.My favorite load for the 45-70 is 25 grains 2400, oke-wonder wad on top of powder, Lee 405 gr fn, slight taper crimp. 1.5 in groups at 100 yards. I use 40 grains of IMR3031 with an Ohaus 45-405-F in my 1895 Marlin. This is not a full load but has significant recoil. 5 rounds is enough at 1 sitting.

Exactly, 12 grains of Unique works in the 45/70 with all bullets I cast and shoot in my Marlin 1895. (Made by Remington, oh no!) Photo attached shows two of the bullets with 12 grains of Unique, top group of five is the NOE 405 FP, lower Ideal 457122 HP both sized .459 with Ben’s Red. Distance is 50 yards.For the 45Colt, depends on how hot you want to load them...the powders in the medium-slow area may be worth a try. Herco, N350, N344, or N347 (those Vihtavauri powders may not be easy to find). AA 5744 works for the Colt and 45-70. Ro...The long range load for my C Sharps 45-70 is 27 grains of 5744 under a Lyman 457125 which weighs 525 in 20/1. My mold has been lapped to drop at .459". My Sharps likes boolits seated to touch the lands (2.95" LOA). 25-28 grains of 5744 should get you in the 1200-1300fps range. Just have to find the node for your rifle.

Burning speed is not the only criteria you should look at in picking powder.
